For many industries, an individual must have an impressive portfolio to stand a chance at getting their dream jobs. This is especially true in the entertainment industry, where the resume is only half the battle.

The look of one’s portfolio may change, depending on their specialty. A photographer’s portfolio will naturally look vastly different from an actor’s portfolio, for example. Yet, there are some standard rules and advice that can be followed to achieve the best outcome.

The Role of a Portfolio

A resume has all of the hard facts pertaining to an individual; the portfolio exists to seal the deal. Its purpose is to sell them to potential employers and clients. A portfolio should seamlessly showcase the professional and relevant skills a person has in a given industry.

As such, aspiring entertainers need to understand what skills they want to showcase in their portfolios. This will be the chance to display their passions, technique, and unique talents.

Less Is More

When building a portfolio, it may be tempting to include every piece one has ever worked on. However, now is the time to remember that less is more. Only include the most impressive pieces.

In general, there is a rule of thumb for how to order a portfolio. Choose the three standout pieces that must go into the portfolio. Put the second-best piece in the front, the third-best in the middle, and the top piece at the end – to leave a lasting impression. All other pieces can be used as filler accordingly.

Industry Challenges

There can be a few additional challenges when creating a portfolio for the entertainment industry. One of the more significant problems here would be the use of proprietary works. As an artist, actor, singer, etc., sometimes it happens. They work on a project but don’t own the rights to it.

One way around this is to describe the project rather than openly portraying it. While it may not have the same impact, those within the industry will undoubtedly be understanding – they’ve been in the same position themselves.

Another complication is finding the best way to display multiple forms of media. That’s where a well-designed website can come in handy. These days, there are hundreds of sites out there to help new creatives build a portfolio – and all of the various media options available.
